An alloy frequently used in jewelry, white gold blends perfectly with a number of precious stones, notably diamonds, whose brilliance it enhances. The precious metal is obtained by alloying various metals, the proportion of which in the final product will depend on purity. In jewelry, you can find 9-carat, 14-carat or 18-carat. For 18-carat white gold, we find 75% pure gold and an alloy of 25% other metals. Daniel Gérard takes a closer look at this precious metal.
Vibrant color
To achieve this luminous color, the goldsmith dips the gold jewel in a rhodium bath. This process, known as rhodium plating, gives white gold its distinctive color and mirror effect. Over the years, the rhodium-plated gold layer may yellow slightly, but this has nothing to do with the quality of the jewel! The goldsmith simply dips the jewel in a new bath of rhodium to restore its radiance.
